Why Raked Triple Trees?

The addition of a sidecar to a motorcycle invariably results in increase steering effort. Trail is the reason. Trail is the factor of the bikes' steering geometry which generates a self-centering force for directional stability. Desirable trail for a sidecar rig is far less than that built into a solo bikes' fork.

From the '50's thru the early 80's, Harley-Davidson produced a special reduced trail Glide fork especially for sidecar use. Liberty Sidecars is now offering similar raked triple trees for most current Harley-Davidson models. The use of these trees on a sidecar outfit results in dramatically reduced steering effort and enhanced drivability.

These before and after photos illustrate the installation of 5 degree raked triple trees on a Softail. Note how much further forward the tire contact patch is in the photo on the right. This change reduces trail by nearly half.
Please note: Raked Triple Trees are NOT suitable for solo riding.
